If you’ve ever looked around a room and thought, “I know what I want… I just don’t know where to start,” you’re not alone. It’s one of the most common things I hear from clients, and honestly, I get it. Decorating a space can feel overwhelming. There are endless paint colours, furniture options, and styles to choose from. So where do you begin?
Here’s my advice, start with one thing you love!
It doesn’t have to be big or bold. It could be a cozy rug, a piece of art, a throw pillow, a lamp, or even a family heirloom. One single item can spark an entire design direction. That one piece becomes your anchor, your inspiration for colour, mood, and style.
When you choose something that speaks to you, it naturally sets the tone for everything else. A soft blue in a painting might inspire the wall colour. The texture in a woven basket might lead you toward warm, natural accents. Even a patterned cushion can help you decide between modern minimalism or a more lived-in, layered look.
Design doesn’t have to start with a plan, it can start with a feeling.
Once you have that one piece, everything else begins to fall into place. From there, I help clients build their colour palette, layer textures, and choose complementary décor that creates a cohesive, beautiful flow throughout the home.
The truth is, every space has a starting point, sometimes, you just have to spot it.
So next time you feel stuck, look around and ask yourself:
👉 What’s the one item I absolutely love?
That’s where your story begins.
