The Art of the Entryway: Small Upgrades, Big Impact

Your entryway is the very first impression your home makes not just for guests, but for you. It’s the moment you step inside after a long day, take a breath, and exhale “I’m home.”
And yet, entryways are often the most overlooked spaces in a house. The good news? You don’t need a full renovation to create a stylish and welcoming foyer. With a few thoughtful updates, you can turn your front entrance into a warm, functional, and elevated introduction to your home.
Recently, I transformed a front foyer here in Ottawa, and the results proved that small upgrades truly do make a big impact.
The Power of First Impressions
A great entryway should feel welcoming, reflect your home’s personality but also stay practical for everyday living!
Think of it as a handshake. A warm, stylish entry says,
“This home is cared for. This home has style. This home feels good to be in.”
The Before: Plain, Functional, Forgettable
This foyer had good bones, natural light, clean lines, and potential. It just lacked personality and purpose. The space felt flat, and like many busy households, it wasn’t working as well as it could.
It needed charm, function, and a little “wow” factor.

The After: Warm, Elevated & Welcoming
With thoughtful updates (and a little DIY magic!), the foyer came to life:
DIY wainscoting painted in Behr Marquee Graphic Charcoal
Moody painted front door for depth + a designer feel
Peel-and-stick wallpaper (MelunMer Light Grey from Amazon) for subtle texture
Black metal hooks (PDGROW DIRECT via Amazon) for everyday functionality
Refreshed décor to soften and balance the modern tones
The result? A small entryway makeover that feels polished, elevated, and so welcoming.
It's incredible what a difference colour, texture, and architectural detail can make, without major renovations or a huge budget.

Design Tip
When tackling an entryway, think in layers:
Color → Texture → Function → Personal touches
If you start with a colour you love, the rest falls into place, I always ask clients to pick one inspiring piece or tone and build from there.
